Most Important Event in History – Jesus Final Week April 13, 2019
As we approach the Passover this season, how do we prepare to observe Jesus our Lord Passover? Do we remember or know what actually happen during Jesus last week and His resurrection?
I would like for us to do a review what happen during this time. There is nothing new we will cover, just to bring back to memory this greatest time period in history. This spring feasts calls for us to remove leaven from our homes and to prepare ourselves for the Passover.
The death and resurrection of Jesus is the most important event in the history of the universe. This is the Bible main theme of the entire Bible. 2/5 of Matthew’s Gospel is concerned with the final week in Jerusalem. 3/5 of Mark, 1/3 of Luke and nearly ½ of John
Wednesday, Nisan 7, Jesus at Ephraim, Day 7
- John 11:54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.
Thursday, Nisan 8, Jesus is at Bethany, Day 6
- John 12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
- Lazarus home with Martha (vs.2) and Mary (vs.3) anoints Jesus, dinner given in Jesus’ honor.
- Priests plan to kill Lazarus.
- This was where Jesus stayed.
Friday, Nisan 9, Day 5
- Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem
- John 12:12-13 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. (13) They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!”
- Weeps over Jerusalem
- Luke 19:41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it
Sabbath Weekly, Nisan 10, Day 4
- Jesus enters and cleanses the temple for the second time in His ministry
- Matthew 21:12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.
Sunday, Nisan 11, Day 3
- Jesus enters the Temple Court and teach
- Matthew 21:23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”
- Two days before Passover
- Matthew 26:2 “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
- Jewish Leadership schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him
- Matthew 26:3-5 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, (4) and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. (5) “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”
- Spends the night in Bethany
- Matthew 26:6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper,
- Jesus was anointed at Bethany
- Matthew 26:7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
Monday, Nisan 12, Day 2
- Leaves Bethany
- Judas bargains with Jewish Leadership to betray Jesus and to arrest Him
- Matthew 26:14-16 Then one of the Twelve; the one called Judas Iscariot; went to the chief priests (15) and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. (16) From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
Tuesday, Nisan 13, Day 1
- Jesus goes to Jerusalem, and prepares for the Passover
- Matthew 26:18-19 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.'” (19) So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
- When evening came, Jesus was eating a meal with the twelve;
- Matthew 26:20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve.
- Jesus washes disciples feet;
- John 13:4-5 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. (5) After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
- Jesus sets an example for us to do.
- John 13:14-15 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. (15) I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
- Jesus said someone will betray me
- John 13:21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
- Judas departs
- John 13:30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
- Jesus gives us a new command
- John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (35) By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

- Matthew 26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.“

- Matthew 26:27-28 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. (28) This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
- Went to the Mount of Olives after song
- Matthew 26:30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
- Jesus Betrayed by Judas, arrested by the Jewish Leadership
- Matthew 26:47-49 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. (48) Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” (49) Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
Wednesday, Nisan 14, Passover Day
- Jesus is arrested and taken to Annas, 1st trial
- John 18:12-13 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him (13) and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
- Jesus is sent to Caiaphas for the 2nd Trial
- John 18:24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
- Jesus went before the Sanhedrin for the 3rd Trial
- Matthew 26:59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.
- Peter denies Jesus a third time;
- Matthew 26:74-75 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed. (75) Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.
- Jews sent Jesus to Pilate for the 4th Trial
- Matthew 27:2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
- Judas hangs himself
- Matthew 27:5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
- Pilate sent Jesus to Herod for 5th Trial
- Luke 23:7 When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.
- Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate for the 6th Trial
- Luke 23:15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death.
- Jesus is scourged, slapped and had crown of thorns on His head
- John 19:1-3 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. (2) The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe (3) and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
- The people shouted, Crucify Him
- John 19:15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
- Jesus is turned over to be crucified
- John 19:16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
- Jesus Carried His own Cross to the Skull
- John 19:17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
- Jesus is crucified around 9 am
- Mark 15:25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
- Area Darkness from Noon until 3 pm
- Matthew 27:45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land.
- Jesus last words and died around 3 in the afternoon
- Matthew 27:46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
- Matthew 27:50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
- Curtain torn in the Temple, earth shook, rocks split
- Matthew 27:51-52 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split (52) and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.
- Jesus’ side pierced by a spear
- John 19:34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.
- Jesus buried and body prepared before sundown by disciples
- Matthew 27:57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.
- Matthew 27:59-60 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, (60) and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.
- Women prepared spices and perfumes, then rested on the High Sabbath
- Luke 23:54 It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.
- Luke 23:56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.
Thursday, Nisan 15, Day 1+
- Jewish Leadership celebrates the Jewish Passover Thursday night
- Notice, this was after Jesus Passover Service.
- John 18:28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
Friday, Nisan 16, Day 2 +
- Women purchase spices between High Sabbath and Weekly Sabbath
- Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.
- Guards secure tomb stone at entrance
- Matthew 27:62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate.
- Matthew 27:66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
Sabbath, Weekly, Nisan 17, Day 3+
- Jesus is raised from the dead before Sunset – 3 days, 3 nights
- Matthew 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Sunday, Nisan 18, Day 4+
- Women goes to the tomb early in the morning
- Matthew 28:1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
- Earthquake in morning, rolled back the stone
- Matthew 28:2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
- Jesus has risen and tells the disciples
- Matthew 28:7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
- Jesus has not ascended to the Father yet
- John 20:17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'”
- Jesus Appears to the Disciples
- John 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
- A week later, Jesus again appears to the Disciples with Thomas
- John 20:26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
- Jesus was with them 40 days
- Acts 1:3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
- Ascension of Jesus to the side of Our Father in Heaven
- Acts 1:9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
