Pentecost 2019 – Holy Spirit

Pentecost 2019 – Holy Spirit                                             June 9, 2019

Today is Pentecost, on a Sunday, June 9, one {FoT}of the few days we celebrate on the first day of the week.  It has been 7 weeks plus 1 day, 50 days from the Passover season.  The Old Testament calls this the Feast of Weeks.

Number 28:26 tells us on this day we are to hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.  But for us, it has a deeper meaning.  This is the day when the New Testament Church started with the giving of the Holy Spirit.

Today, Let’s look at the Holy Spirit.

We have covered this many times with the understanding that Pentecost is the celebration of the birth of Jesus led church as recounted in Acts 2.

  • Jesus’s disciples (about 120) were gathered in an “upper room” in Jerusalem after Jesus’s death, resurrection, and ascension.
  • He had told them to go there and wait to be “clothed with power from on high” that would then make them witnesses to him throughout the world.

Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

Acts 1:4-5 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.  (5)  For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”  {Remember, Israel was baptize in the Red Sea}

As they were gathered there, celebrating the feast of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon them “like a rushing, mighty wind” and “tongues of flame” appeared over their heads.

Notice, all, one accord usually in prayer together.  Look at

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.  {Jesus physical half-brothers were there}

Acts 1:15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers {disciples} (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)

The Holy Spirit Descends, let’s look at this a little closer.

Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

Did they do this for the nine days leading up to Pentecost

Acts 2:2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Acts 2:3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Think about it this, when the Holy Spirit, the Power of the Holy Spirit, came to the 120, Jesus considered this a baptism for His followers at the time and the Holy Spirit came upon those 120 in the upper room, a laying of Jesus hands on them.

The Holy Spirit enable the disciples to speak in tongues.

Acts 2:5-6  Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.  (6)  When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

Peter Sermon at Pentecost

Acts 2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.

Acts 2:37-38 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”  (38)  Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
