Book of Psalms: Chapter 4 – 6

Psalms Chapter 4 – 6                                                 February 13, 2021

To the Chief Musician. With Stringed Instruments. A Psalm of David.

Answer Me When I Call

Psalms 4:1-11

Psalms 4:1 Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.

  • Interesting, Can we really expect God to hear us if we do not call or pray to Him.
  • Have mercy or show favor to us, if we do not pray to Him.
  • The Father has our prayers saved, do we have much in the saved area.

The phrase has two meanings: (1) only God is righteous; and (2) all of a person’s righteousness is found in Jesus alone.

Remember, we have Jesus living in us and the Father sees Jesus righteousness in us.

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Psalms 4:2 How long, O you sons of men, Will you turn my glory to shame? How long will you love vanity and seek falsehood? Selah

  • God is speaking to the wicked, a lie, untruth or deceptive thing.
  • The wicked were not following God and trying to destroy God’s reputation / honor
  • Their appointed leader; they support lies and deceit.

Psalms 4:3 Know that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.

  • God has identified and called those who are devoted to Jesus and His ways.
  • God exercises special care over us and listens to our prayers.

I believe everyone has used the following quote from Psalms.

2 Thessalonians 2:13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

Psalms 4:4 Be angry, and do not sin. Think about this when upon your beds, and be silent. Selah

The Apostle Paul quoted these words

Ephesians 4:26 “BE ANGRY, AND DO NOT SIN: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

We are told to lie quietly upon our bed and be in silent meditation about God

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is fair, whatever is pure, whatever is acceptable, whatever is commendable, if there is anything of excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—keep thinking about these things.

Psalms 4:5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And put your trust in the LORD.

Paul wrote:  **Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

God is telling us about sacrifices and calls us to put our faith in Jesus

Psalms 4:6 Many are asking, “Who will help us to see better days?” LORD, may the light of your favor shine upon us.

Although our everyday lives often seem to be filled with uncertainty, Important to remember, there is never uncertainty with God.

Psalms 4:7 You have given me more joy in my heart than at harvest times, when grain and wine abound.

The joy of God’s presence in me means more to me than good food and wine.  The Holy Spirit living in us gives us the joy and peace we need.

Psalms 4:8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

God’s peace will enable an anxious or worried person to lie down and sleep and feel safe.  Especially what is going on in our nation right now.

Psalms 5:1-12

To the Director: For flutes. A Psalm of David.

Lead me in your Righteousness

Psalms 5:1 LORD, listen to my words, consider my groaning.

Please listen to my plea, Father, for I will never pray to anyone but you.

Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  (27)  Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Psalms 5:2 Pay attention to my cry for help, my king and my God, for unto you will I pray.

Psalms 5:3 LORD, in the morning you will hear my voice; in the morning I will pray to you, and I will watch for your answer.

The first action of the day is to pray to you in heaven.  Pray in the morning, to start the day out, then wait, with patience and trust for an answer to my prayer.

Jesus example:

Mark 1:35 In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went to a deserted place and prayed there.

What does Jesus do with our prayers we say to the Father

Revelation 5:8 When the lamb had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders bowed down in front of him. Each held a harp and a gold bowl full of Incense, the Prayers of the Saints.

Our prayers are like Incense and puts them into a Gold Bowl to keep.

Psalms 5:4 For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness; with you, evil people are not welcome.

There is no enjoyment to be found in evil.  God will not tolerate evil.

Psalms 5:5 Boastful ones will not stand before you; you hate all those who practice wickedness.

Notice, the few verses the Father show He hates practice wickedness.

Matthew 7:23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Psalms 5:6 You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; The LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

God will destroy individuals for their lies and how you hate People who sheds innocent blood {murderers} and deception.   Is lies one of the worse things.

Romans 1:32 Although they know God’s just requirement—that those who practice such things deserve to die—they not only do these things but even applaud others who practice them.

Psalms 5:7 But I, by your great love, can come into your house; in fear of You I will worship toward your Holy Temple.

Notice the Temple as yet been built, but the Tabernacle was called the House of God, the residence of God. {1 Ch 9:23}

Jesus was in both the Tabernacle and Temple.  Remember, we are the Temple of the Holy Spirit and Jesus lives in us.

We are allowed to come into the Temple protected by your mercy and love, since we have Jesus living in us.

Psalms 5:8 LORD, lead me in your righteousness because of my enemies. Make your path straight before me.

As long as we have the righteousness of Jesus in us, We may ask Jesus to make known in which “The Way” we should walk or turn to. Our enemy, Satan, is walking around like a lion.

Psalms 5:9 But as for the wicked, they do not speak truth at all. Inside them there is only wickedness. Their throat is an open grave, on their tongue is deceitful flattery.

These words describe the perverse language used by the wicked in opposition to the Father and Jesus.

Paul used this verse:

Romans 3:13 “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.”

Wicked hearts are full of sin and mouths filled with deceitful flatteries

Psalms 5:10 Declare them guilty, God! Let them fall by their own schemes. Drive them away because of their many transgressions, for they have rebelled against you.

David prayed for justice. Anyone who resents this kind of praying can’t pray “Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.”

If we are troubled by this, perhaps we don’t hate sin enough to get upset at the wickedness and godlessness around us.  We have gotten too used to the darkness…

Contain curses for the punishment of enemies

Psalms 5:11 But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You.

Philippians 4:4 Keep on rejoicing in the Lord at all times. I will say it again: Keep on rejoicing!

When we are changed at Jesus return, we will shout for joy

Psalms 5:12 Indeed, you will bless the righteous one, LORD, like a large shield, you will surround him with favor.

The Father bless and protect the Saints with His Shield of Love

Psalms 6:1-10

O Lord, Deliver My Life

To the Director: With stringed instruments. On an eight-stringed harp. A Davidic Psalm.

Psalms 6:1 LORD, in your anger, do not rebuke me, in your wrath, do not discipline me.

Do we not feel this way sometimes?

Psalms 6:2 Be gracious to me, LORD, because I am fading away. Heal me, because my bones are in agony.

We pray to the Father for I am weak in the flesh, heal me, for my body and my soul is sick and diseased, because Jesus died for us, only He can help me.

We plead for mercy, be gracious or show favor to one of your Saints during these crises we are in.

Psalms 6:3 My soul also is greatly troubled; But You, O LORD; how long?

How Long shows up 16 time in the Book of Psalms.  Strong emotion.

We are to accept our trial and submit and pray that the lesson is not wasted.

Matthew 5:11-12 “How blessed are you whenever people insult you, persecute you, and say all sorts of evil things against you falsely because of me!  (12)  Rejoice and be extremely glad, because your reward in heaven is great! That’s how they persecuted the prophets who came before you.”

Jesus used these words approaching the Cross.

John 12:27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.

Psalms 6:4 Return, O LORD, deliver me! Oh, save me for Your mercies’ sake!

Return is the call for God to act, is based on our faith,

My God, please make me well and in your kindness save me.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

Psalms 6:5 In death, there is no memory of you. Who will give you thanks where the dead are?

In Death – we have no memory of God and being created to praise God.  If we are in the grave, we cannot help individuals or give you any glory to your name or by praising you before my friends.

Psalms 6:6 I am weary from my groaning. Every night my couch is drenched with tears, my bed is soaked through.

By these words, it shows the abundance as well as intensity of grief is depicted.

Did not Jesus have drops of blood.

Luke 22:44 In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like large drops of blood falling on the ground.

Psalms 6:7 My eyesight has faded because of grief, it has dimmed because of all my enemies.

Psalms 6:8 Get away from me, all of you who practice evil, for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping.

God has heard his prayer and no longer fears his enemies.

Luke 13:27 But he will tell you, ‘I don’t know where you come from. Get away from me, all you who practice evil!’

Psalms 6:9 The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD receives my prayer.

Two times he said this with confident of faith, God will answer our prayers

1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him: if we ask for anything according to his will, he listens to us.

Psalms 6:10 As for all my enemies, they will be put to shame; they will be greatly frightened and suddenly turn away ashamed.

Luke 13:17 And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.

  • When the wicked think the Saints will perish, by faith God will delivers us suddenly, and destroys our enemies.
  • This is both physical {individuals} and spiritual {demons} enemies that will be dishonored, terror-stricken and disgraced.
